Research in the Hub: November 21, 2017

Tuesday Nov 21

Tuesday November 21 the professorships together with the International Master Artist Educator and the Master Werkplaats Typografie organise the last AIRs Meetup of this year. Join us at the location of IMAE in the old post office in Spijkerkwartier Arnhem.

Keynote speaker Nuno Sacramento is researcher, curator, writer, lecturer and director of Peacock Visual Arts in Aberdeen (UK). In their recent book, Bloom and Sacramento propose Deep Mapping as an alternative to traditional maps. In his lecture Sacramento will present two practice-based approaches to what he calls Deep Mapping as perspective from below, one as individual narrative and the other as collective group experience; the idea is to give greater consideration to the planet’s devastated landscapes, the global poor, and earth-others, displacing the colonising narratives of traditional cartography and dominant culture.

Joëlle Tuerlinckx, our other keynote speaker, is a Belgium artist who combines film projections, video, drawings, collages, photographs and found objects into expansive and complex installations, with subtle alterations to the spaces and gestures that highlight the time and space of the viewing experience. She has exhibited widely since the early 1990s and had a major presentation at Documenta 11 in 2002.

Also ArtEZ students and alumni present their research.
Merel van der Velde, Lory Stuurman and Caro de Feijter (alumni of the International Master Artist Educator) work on a project in Presikhaaf Arnhem. This project is attempting to challenge extremist political views. In doing so they accomplish encounters between inhabitants in order to try to develop broader centre ground in the lead up to the local elections in March.

Melina Wilson, Participant of the Master Werkplaats Typografie, and Josse Pyl, Alumnus of the Master Werkplaats Typografie and current resident of the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten present their research.
